How are accommodation and transport organized for volunteers?
It depends on the project. Some projects have their own volunteer accommodation at the venue while volunteers in Cape Town often stay in shared student flats/houses in town.
For Cape Town volunteers we either arrange daily transport to and from the project or the volunteers get their own cars.
Please also read the volunteer or internship section as lots of questions are answered there as well or send us an email for personal assistance!
When is a good time to apply?
We take applications throughout the year but each project has its own requirements and regulations, so we advise you to start planning your stay at least 3-4 months before departure.
What are living expenses per month?
The figures below give you an idea of the costs but your personal costs will obviously depend on your lifestyle and if you require your own car. Not included are tours/activities.
Accommodation (single room) in a shared flat/house: 3000-4000R per month
Food: R2500 per month
Entertainment: R2000 per month
Car rental: 3000R- 3300R (insurance incl) per month
Petrol: R10.90 per liter (July 2012)
Do I have to get any vaccinations or medicine before coming to SA?
It depends on where are you planning to stay. Cape Town is not a malaria zone. Should you travel through the country please consult the travel bureau to determine if the area you are visiting is a malaria zone.
If you work with animals, we recommend that you get vaccinations like anti-tetanus or rabies.
